This project challenged us to create a classic book jacket design while focusing on showing a visual metaphor that goes beyond literal interpretation. For example, to avoid using obvious symbols like a whale for "Moby Dick." This was a project that consisted of 5 phases over the span of five weeks. The first two phases consisted of brainstorming, research of demographics, a mood board, and sketches. The last few phases consisted of executing the ideas and mockups.
In the end, there were two designs that went into a mockup. They both show symbolism of modern themes in the book like shame and guilt, but in the end, I felt that the left design was the strongest. The left design takes the Puritan time period and brings a modern, yet relatable to this generation. The minimal silhouette and bold beam of red light simplify the story’s emotional weight into a single, striking moment. It hints at exposure, isolation, and internal conflict, but leaves enough room for interpretation.
